Importance In April

April has more importance as a month then most tend to realize, and not just concerning the day where other are compelled to fool their friends, neighbors, and acquaintances. Here are some important or just some memorable days in April.

April 1, 1853 – Cincinnati became 1st US city to pay fire fighters a regular salary.

April 2, 1870 – Victoria Woodhull is 1st woman to be nominated for U.S. president.

April 5, 1887 – Anne Sullivan teaches “water” to Helen Keller.

April 5, 2173 – Harcourt Fenton “Harry” Mudd, New Amsterdam, Arcturus (Star Trek).

April 6, 1906 – 1st animated cartoon copyrighted.

April 11, 1917 – Babe Ruth beats NY Yanks, pitching 3-hit 10-3 win for Red Sox.

April 16, 2007 – Virginia Tech massacre: The deadliest mass shooting in modern American history. The gunman, Seung-Hui Cho, shoots 32 people to death and injures 23 others before committing suicide.

 April 18, 1924 – 1st crossword puzzle book published (Simon & Schuster).

April 21, 1930 – Fire at Ohio State Penitentiary kills 322.

April 24, 1950 – “Peter Pan” opens at Imperial Theater NYC for 320 performances.

April 25, 1953 – Scientists identify DNA.

April 27, 1964 – John Lennon’s “In His Own Write” is published in US.

April 29, 1975 – Vietnam War: Operation Frequent Wind: The U.S. begins to evacuate US citizens from Saigon prior to an expected North Vietnamese takeover. U.S. involvement in the war comes to an end.

April 30, 1997 – 42 million watch “Ellen” admit she is gay.

April 30, 1997 – Big Ben stops at 12:11 PM for 54 minutes.
